Twitter owner Elon Musk explained that the new limitations placed on Twitter usage are meant to combat addiction to social media and encourage people to look up from their phones,
"The reason I set a “View Limit” is because we are all Twitter addicts and need to go outside," Musk wrote in a tweet. "I’m doing a good deed for the world here. Also, that’s another view you just used."
In another post, he wrote: "you awake from a deep trance, step away from the phone to see your friends & family."
Over the weekend, Musk announced that users with unverified Twitter accounts (that do not pay for a monthly subscription) will be limited to reading only 600 posts a day, compared to verified accounts, whose users will be able to read 6,000 posts a day.
New accounts that have not been verified will be able to read a maximum of 300 posts per day.
The new Twitter rules are also meant to prevent technical issues from arising due to high traffic on the platform.
