Explosions heard in Iranian city of Karaj, air defense systems activated

Explosions were heard on Thursday evening over the Iranian city of Karaj.

Eyewitnesses reported several explosions and interceptions of drones. The country’s air defense systems were reportedly activated.

The official IRNA news agency claimed that the explosions and the activation of air defenses were part of an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) exercise near Karaj.

The IRGC-affiliated Tasnim news agency said the explosions were part of "routine" drills of Basij forces at a nearby training camp.

There is a nuclear facility located in Karaj, northwest of Tehran. The facility was shaken by a mysterious blast in June of 2021 that destroyed monitoring equipment and which Iran blamed on Israel.

While Iran initially said it had managed to foil what it called the “act of sabotage” on the plant, satellite photos released later showed extensive damage that was caused to the plant.

Thursday’s incident comes after a drone attack on a defense ministry site in central Isfahan province.

The drone attack was attributed to Israel, with intelligence officials telling The New York Times that the Isfahan attack was the work of the Mossad.

Iran's intelligence ministry said a few weeks ago it had arrested the "main actors" involved in the Isfahan attack.
