NT Wright: Evangelical Views on Modern-Day Israel Are ‘Unbiblical,’ ‘Dangerous’

At a conference on Romans this week, theologian Dr. N.T. Wright again criticized the evangelical Christian view that Israel has a key role in fulfilling prophecy. Not only is that idea “totally unbiblical,” the scholar said, but it’s “a very dangerous thing to believe.”

Wright is the featured speaker at “The Fresh Challenge of Romans,” a four-day lecture series at Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas. During a Q&A session Monday evening (Nov. 2), the New Testament scholar and retired Anglican bishop addressed topics including Israel, Christian citizenship, and Christian nationalism.

...At Monday’s Q&A in Dallas, Wright noted that several “odd strands” of Christian thought have “contributed toward what I think is a totally unbiblical idea, namely that the present modern-day state of Israel is somehow a fulfillment of prophecy.” About this idea, which he called “simply unwarranted,” Wright said now that “the chickens are coming home to roost, we’re seeing that it’s a very dangerous thing to believe.” (Read More)

Senior Researcher Brad Myers Comments,

You are probably asking, "Who is theologian N. T. Wright?" Christianity Today says this about him:  "People who are asked to write about N. T. Wright may find they quickly run out of superlatives. He is the most prolific biblical scholar of a generation. Some say he is the most important apologist for the Christian faith since C. S. Lewis."

Are we seriously expected to believe, based on the views of this popular Bible scholar, that it is completely unbiblical to see the modern state of Israel as a fulfillment of prophecy?

 Ezekilel 37:21-22

“Then say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Surely I will take the children of Israel from among the nations, wherever they have gone, and will gather them from every side and bring them into their own land; and I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king over them all; they shall no longer be two nations, nor shall they ever be divided into two kingdoms again."

Ezekiel 36:8-11

"But you, O mountains of Israel, you shall shoot forth your branches and yield your fruit to My people Israel, for they are about to come. For indeed I am for you, and I will turn to you, and you shall be tilled and sown. I will multiply men upon you, all the house of Israel, all of it; and the cities shall be inhabited and the ruins rebuilt. I will multiply upon you man and beast; and they shall increase and bear young; I will make you inhabited as in former times, and do better for you than at your beginnings. Then you shall know that I am the Lord."

These are only three passages among many more that prophesied the return of the Jews back to their historiic homeland of Israel.
