Gazans Speak Out: “We’d Rather Die Than Be Humiliated”

Despite Israel’s Efforts to Provide Safe Zones and Humanitarian Aid, Hamas Blocks Evacuations, Exploits Civilians as Human Shields, and Fuels Growing Anger Among Gazans. Only about 5,000 Gazans out of more than a million have evacuated south in the past week, despite repeated Israeli military warnings and efforts to provide safe zones. The low numbers highlight the challenges facing the IDF as it prepares to expand operations in Gaza City.

Yesterday (Wednesday), IDF Arabic spokesman Col. Avichay Adraee released a statement identifying open areas in southern Gaza suitable for displaced civilians, underscoring Israel’s intent to deepen military action in Gaza City. Hamas immediately tried to frame the announcement as “psychological warfare” and “deception.” Hamas Strategy: Block Evacuations, Exploit Civilians.

Hamas propaganda instructs civilians to stay put, portraying Israel’s evacuation notices as “tricks” designed to force Gazans into Israeli fire zones. Their objectives are clear:

* Prevent mass movement south that would signal Hamas is losing control of the streets.
* Deflect internal anger at Hamas’s abandonment of the population by blaming Israel.
* Maintain a façade of resilience, using the presence of civilians as proof Hamas still “controls the s   situation.”
* Weaponize the population by ensuring civilians remain in harm’s way, thereby complicating IDF operations.

Voices of Anger Inside Gaza.  The IDF’s latest message sparked fierce debate online in Gaza. Some residents openly criticized Hamas for sacrificing civilians: “Why does Hamas want to exhaust the people when they can’t even provide food or income? Only corrupt elites profit while ordinary families starve.” Others expressed despair at the skyrocketing costs of displacement. Families report tents costing $1,000–$2,000, unaffordable for most. Meanwhile, hardline voices call for staying put at any cost:

“Tell them there’s plenty of land in the north for us. We won’t go south—we’ll die here first.”
“Everyone knows Hamas betrayed us. We warned people long ago what their project is, but they wouldn’t listen until now.” Another Gazan added: “We all know Israel wants to destroy us whether north or south. People are tired of displacement; they prefer death over humiliation.” (Ed note: Remember that 87% of the Gazans always vote with Hamas, and 40% of that number are perfectly happy with suicide bombers.) (Read More)
