Israel has turned to the US requesting that the Lebanese elections be moved up, by means of Qatari intervention, Kan Reshet Bet reported Wednesday morning.
According to the report, Israel believes that new elections will weaken the Hezbollah terror group's power in the Lebanese parliament, and that Qatar may be able to influence the matter.
Senior Israeli officials told senior US officials that elections in Lebanon will also greatly contribute to potential normalization between the two countries. The US has not rejected the idea.
On Sunday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with senior officials from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and France, asking them to help advance Lebanese presidential elections.
Due to internal disagreements, Lebanon has not had a president for over a year. Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and France all have an influence on Lebanon, and the US estimates that they may be able to push the matter. Israel National News - Arutz Sheva
