On Thursday, the UN Security Council is set to meet in an emergency session to discuss the visit of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir to the Temple Mount earlier this week.
Ahead of the session, it has been learned, Israeli diplomats have been making efforts to defuse the situation and ensure that the Council does not adopt a decision or even make a statement regarding the incident.
According to i24NEWS, on Wednesday the Israeli ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Amir Hayek, spoke with the UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, Reem Al Hashimy on the phone, in order to emphasize that Ben-Gvir's visit did not constitute any challenge whatsover to the status quo and that the new government has no intention of altering arrangements at the holy site.
The UAE minister displayed willingness to do her best to calm the waters, although she added that given the fact that Abu Dhabi (one of the emirates) is a representative of the Arab League on the Security Council, her options were somewhat limited.
