The spokesman of Iran's Foreign Ministry, Saeed Khatibzadeh, on Sunday urged the United States to "return to the global community" and perform its duties, the Xinhua news agency reports.
"The world has reached nothing but insecurity, war and instability with US actions," Khatibzadeh was quoted as having said in his weekly press briefing.
The Iranian spokesman was commenting on remarks made by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who stated on the weekend that "the United States is returning virtually all United Nations sanctions on Iran."
Khatibzadeh described Pompeo's position as "a world full of lies," and added that the only trace of the US actions in the world is "ruinous and ominous legacy," and Washington is now heading for "a new act of defiance."
Iran's message to Washington, he added, is that it should "return to the global community and to its duties."
In August, Washington started the process of restoring all pre-2015 UN sanctions against Iran. The move to activate the “snapback” came after the UN Security Council rejected the US resolution to extend the arms embargo on Iran, which is due to expire in October.
However, the president of the UN Security Council rejected the US demand, saying there was no general agreement among council members.
The "snapback" move is part of a 2015 Security Council resolution which allows any participant in a nuclear accord with Iran negotiated under former President Barack Obama to reimpose sanctions, which would take effect one month afterward.
