An increasing number of Iranian clerics and officials are pressing Iranian leaders to reverse their pledge not to pursue nuclear weapons, the New York Times reported on Wednesday.

Schumer vows to end Iran war after Democrats win Senate majority

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer pledges to use his party's new majority to end the Iran war, challenging Trump over military action and rising costs.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer on Wednesday pledged to use his party's newly secured Senate majority to bring an end to the war with Iran, arguing that President Donald Trump had failed to explain the objectives of the military campaign to the American public.

Speaking at a news conference following Tuesday's midterm elections, Schumer sharply criticized the administration's handling of the conflict.

“The American people don't know what the heck we're fighting for in Iran," Schumer said. “He's never made it clear. He changes his mind day-to-day and minute-to-minute. This war must end. It must end.

Schumer said Democrats had won 54 Senate seats and could potentially expand their majority to 55 or 56, giving them greater influence over the administration's policies.

Asked whether Democrats would consider using defense funding to pressure Trump into ending the war, Schumer pointed to previous votes in which some Republican lawmakers had joined Democrats in opposing the conflict.

Nuclear option for Iran — blocked by Congress

 

With Democrats now controlling both houses of Congress, Israel may find itself cut off from the heavy munitions it would need for a strike on Iran's most fortified sites.

The weapon has returned to the center of debate in Washington. According to U.S. reports, the administration has examined military options against a heavily fortified underground Iranian nuclear facility near Natanz known as Pickaxe Mountain, which is carved some 100 meters deep into solid granite. Jerusalem hospitals prepare shelters in parking lots ahead of possible Iran war

 
The northern Israeli city of Karmiel said Tuesday it had raised its security readiness and ordered inspections of all public shelters, citing media speculation about a possible new war. Separately, Sky News Arabia reported that hospitals in Jerusalem and other parts of Israel are converting parking lots into emergency facilities.

Karmiel’s municipality said in a statement that Mayor Moshe Koninsky had instructed the city’s security officer and security teams to raise readiness and check every public shelter.

The measures are meant to ensure the city can handle “any emergency scenario,” the statement said, citing “talk of war circulating in the media.”

The municipality stressed that there had been “no change in the instructions” of Israel’s Home Front Command, the military body responsible for civilian protection and public guidance during emergencies. That suggests the steps in Karmiel are precautionary and not a response to new official directives.

Hospital parking lots turned into emergency space

Sky News Arabia, citing its correspondent, reported that parking lots at most major hospitals in Israel are being cleared and converted into emergency departments.

In a separate urgent report, the channel said parking lots at hospitals in Jerusalem are being converted and equipped as shelters in anticipation of war with Iran. The reports did not specify which hospitals were affected or who ordered the work. (Read More)

Trump says Israel will stop receiving $4B in US aid by year's end, can still buy weapons

 
Netanyahu raised the idea, Trump says, arguing Israel is 'a very thriving country' that no longer needs it

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that U.S. aid to Israel would end at the close of the year, arguing that the country no longer needs the assistance and can purchase its own weapons.

"We were giving them $4 billion – we are – but it gets cut off at the end of the year," Trump told "Fox & Friends" on Tuesday in an Election Day morning announcement.

Trump acknowledged the political nature of the news, pointing to Michigan's battleground Senate race between Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers.

"Why should we suffer the slings from lunatics like an El-Sayed when they don't need it?" Trump said. "It's a bad talking point."

The support included "things and money," according to Trump, calling it military aid, cash or "barter." He said he and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had discussed ending the assistance for years, adding that Netanyahu raised the idea. (Read More)

El-Sayed, whom Jewish Republicans call ‘most antisemitic’ Senate candidate, wins Michigan race

 

“They try to call you ‘hateful’ if you believe that Palestinian kids should get to grow up in the land of their forefathers,” Dr. Abdul El-Sayed said.

Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, the Democrat whom the Republican Jewish Coalition has called “the most antisemitic U.S. Senate candidate in America,” defeated former Republican congressman Mike Rogers early on Wednesday morning in one of the country’s most closely watched Senate races, particularly for Jews and Zionists.

The Associated Press called the race at 2:27 a.m. on Wednesday. With more than 95% of votes counted, El-Sayed routed Rogers by seven points, with 2,497,852 votes (52.5%) to the Republican’s 2,162,890, or 45.5%.

A former Detroit health director, El-Sayed will succeed retiring Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.), becoming the first Muslim elected to the Senate.

His victory follows a bitter campaign, in which he called Israel’s government “bloodthirsty” and “as evil as Hamas,” suggested that a terrorist who attacked a Michigan synagogue had been driven by Israeli military actions in Lebanon because “hurt people hurt people” and campaigned with antisemitic streamer Hasan Piker, who said that “America deserved 9/11.”

He has called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a war criminal, accused Israel of buying U.S. Jewish support and opposed the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s working definition of antisemitism.

On Oct. 26, Rebellion PAC released an advertisement supporting El-Sayed that blamed rising grocery costs on U.S. military aid to Israel.

Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO and national director of the Anti-Defamation League, called the as “a case study in antisemitism.” El-Sayed’s campaign said it had no affiliation with the advertisement but initially stopped short of condemning its content.

On Nov. 1, Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.), whom El-Sayed narrowly defeated in the Democratic primary in August, endorsed Rogers, citing El-Sayed’s rhetoric about Israel and his association with Piker.

Her endorsement drew criticism from Democratic leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who called it “a despicable betrayal.”

Despite the controversies surrounding him, a survey commissioned by the Jewish Majority found that 57% of Jewish early voters in Michigan supported El-Sayed.

The survey of 482 Jewish voters, 75% of whom identified as Democrats or leaned Democratic, was conducted between Oct. 25 and 31, before Stevens endorsed Rogers. It had a large margin of error.

El-Sayed substantially underperformed among those surveyed compared with other Democrats on the ballot. Democratic gubernatorial nominee Jocelyn Benson received support from 78%.

3,500 Hezbollah terrorist sites destroyed in eight months

 
After eight months of operations in the Wadi Saluki, Qantara, and Litani areas, troops from the IDF's 7th Brigade have completed their mission in southern Lebanon.

Troops from the IDF's 7th Brigade Combat Team have completed eight months of operational activity in southern Lebanon, during which they eliminated approximately 400 Hezbollah terrorists and destroyed around 3,500 terrorist infrastructure sites belonging to the organization.

Throughout the operation, brigade forces targeted the terrorist networks established by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, focusing on destroying operational infrastructure, locating weapons, and eliminating Hezbollah operatives.

One of the main objectives was the destruction of Hezbollah's underground infrastructure, including complexes known as "refuge cities." According to the IDF, these facilities formed part of an underground infrastructure network established by Hezbollah with financial support from the Iranian regime.

The complexes were destroyed by troops from the 7th Brigade in cooperation with soldiers from the Yahalom Unit, which specializes in special engineering operations, including missions targeting underground infrastructure. (Read More)

The Islamic State threat against Israel is growing — and much of it has gone unnoticed

The new report notes that approximately two-thirds of the cases recorded since the Oct. 7 massacre involved Arab citizens of Israel rather than Palestinians from Judea and Samaria or Jerusalem.

While Israel has focused much of its security attention on Iran and its regional proxies such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and Islamic State (IS), it has quietly intensified its campaign against the Jewish state, mounting an unprecedented wave of plots and attempted attacks that has largely escaped international attention.

According to a database compiled by Aaron Zelin, a senior research fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, Israeli security forces have disrupted more plots by the jihadist terror group since the Hamas-led invasion of and massacre across southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, than during the entire nine-and-a-half years preceding it.

Between 2014 and 2023, Israeli forces conducted 50 IS-related arrest operations, compared with 46 in the period since the Oct. 7 atrocities, marking a significant surge in the group’s attempted attacks and operational activity. (Read More)

Israel's security leadership is convinced that recent developments have made military action unavoidable in the foreseeable future. The ultimate decision, however, rests with US President Donald Trump, who is known for his efforts to keep adversaries guessing. One evening, he threatens to destroy Iranian civilization; by the following morning, he is talking about progress in negotiations.

Meanwhile, Qatar is engaged in intensive diplomatic efforts to mediate between the sides and avert an attack. According to published reports, Qatar's new proposal includes several confidence-building measures designed to give both sides a way to back down without losing face.

A narrow window of opportunity and the Iranian threat

The outcome of the US midterm elections will also influence when a military campaign might begin, should one be launched. If early forecasts prove accurate and Trump loses control of both houses of Congress, he will have roughly two months before the newly elected Congress takes office, during which the current Congress will remain in session.

That means the political window of opportunity for an operation is unlikely to remain open for long. It is worth remembering, however, that Trump is expected to visit China in a few days, and it is doubtful he would want to arrive there with a war raging. (Read More)

The new face of Congress: Mamdani's allies head to Washington

 

Lander, Valdez and Chevalier, all endorsed by the mayor, support halting military aid to Israel, although they differ on Zionism and the conditions for resuming assistance.

Three candidates backed by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani – Darializa Avila Chevalier, Claire Valdez and Brad Lander – won races in solidly Democratic New York districts. All three had secured their party's nominations in June, defeating candidates backed by the Democratic establishment.

Lander, a Jewish politician and former New York City comptroller, defeated incumbent Dan Goldman. Valdez, a Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) member serving in the New York State Assembly, won the nomination to succeed retiring congresswoman Nydia Velázquez. Chevalier, an anti-Zionist activist, narrowly defeated longtime incumbent Adriano Espaillat.

The victories exposed tensions within the Democratic Party, with House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries having backed the incumbents against Mamdani's candidates. FOX 5 NY reported that the endorsements had become a key storyline in New York's congressional primaries.

All three newcomers support halting military aid to Israel, although they differ on Zionism and the conditions for resuming assistance.
