Iran is storing centrifuges at Pickaxe Mountain, a senior Israeli diplomatic source said Wednesday. Israel does not believe Iran’s nuclear program has been completely destroyed, the source told reporters who accompanied Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to his meeting with US President Donald Trump in Washington on Tuesday. “The goal is how to bring the nuclear program to an end,” the source said, adding that Israel had targeted nuclear scientists, enrichment facilities, centrifuges, and other infrastructure, successfully setting the program back, “but not forever.”
“There are centrifuges at Pickaxe Mountain even if enrichment is not currently taking place,” the source said, and Israel would not hesitate to act again against any attempt to rebuild Iran’s nuclear program or its ballistic-missile array. During his meeting with Trump, Netanyahu displayed maps that refute calls for Israeli withdrawal from Syrianterritory, the Israeli diplomatic source said.
The maps showed that Turkey controls about 5% of Syrian territory, while Israel controls only about 0.1%, the source said. Netanyahu had made the case that Israel’s presence is intended to counter threats from Iran, Hezbollah, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and other terrorist organizations, the source added. “Sometimes the president has certain assumptions, and if you don’t change them, they become fixed,” the source said, adding that this was one of the reasons Netanyahu chose to present the information visually.
Although Syria was discussed, it served primarily as an introduction to the central topic of the meeting, Iran, the source said, and most of the conversation had focused on how to address it following the significant blow to its nuclear program.
