Israeli forces foil gun smugglers from Egypt, Jordan

A drone from Egypt was carrying two long-barrel guns, while a separate IDF and police operations on the Jordan border uncovered smuggled handguns, according to the military.

Israeli soldiers on Saturday intercepted an attempt to smuggle weapons into the country from Egypt via drone, the Israel Defense Forces said on Sunday. The UAV “from the west” was carrying two long-barrel guns, according to the military. In a separate incident on Saturday, troops patrolling areas where smuggling activity had occurred in the past spotted drugs and ammunition, according to the statement.

On Friday, the IDF’s Lions of the Jordan Valley Battalion (41st) and the YAGAL unit of the Israel Police thwarted an attempt to smuggle weapons via the border with Jordan. According to the IDF statement, security forces located two pistols in the northern sector of the Jordan Valley, and apprehended a suspect in the area.

Soldiers of the 80th Division thwarted 130 drone-assisted smuggling attempts along the border with Egypt last month, the military announced on Nov. 17. “Attempts to smuggle weapons, drugs, and various criminal items into Israeli territory have increased significantly in recent months,” according to the military.
