Wong is backing comments made by Britain's foreign minister David Cameron who has said that recognising a Palestinian state, including at the UN, would make a two-state solution irreversible.
Reuters reports that Wong spoke at the Australian National University and said that this is seen as “the only hope to break the endless cycle of violence.” She continued to say that the failure on all sides over the decades, as well as Netanyahu’s refusal to even deal with the question of a Palestinian state, has caused a lot of frustration and the international community is discussing Palestinian statehood "as a way of building momentum towards a two-state solution.”
Wong added that “There is no role for Hamas in a future Palestinian state. Israel’s security is dependent on a two-state solution and recognition of a Palestinian state will help undermine Hamas and push it into the margins.”
The opposition in Australia has condemned the foreign minister’s statement, saying that recognition of a Palestinian state will be “a victory for the terrorists.”
The Nightly reports that spokesman for the opposition on foreign affairs, Simon Birmingham, said that “Albania’s claim to recognize a Palestinian state in advance, is “giving Hamas terrorists [the ones who initiated the terrible conflict] something they want.”
