Putin to visit Iran next week

Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit Iran next week, the Kremlin announced Tuesday morning.

Spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed to reporters that Putin will travel to Iran next week, after a senior Iranian official said the Russian leader had scheduled a trip to Tehran.

Peskov said that Putin will take part in a trilateral summit with leaders from Turkey and Iran.

Furthermore, Putin will hold a separate meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The meeting comes less than a month after Turkish authorities broke up an Iranian terror cell operating in Istanbul, arresting all eight members.

According to reports this week, the cell had planned to carry out shooting attacks on two groups of Israeli tourists, and to kidnap Israeli diplomats.

Putin’s trip to Iran comes amid ongoing Western sanctions on Moscow, prompting Putin to call for closer ties with allied states, including Iran.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi visited Russia less than two weeks ago, and met with President Putin on the sidelines of the Caspian summit a day after Western leaders met for the G7 summit.
