Putin, Erdogan and Raisi to meet in Tehran

Russia's Vladimir Putin will meet his Turkish and Iranian counterparts in Tehran today (Tuesday, July 19) for talks regarding the war in Ukraine. Turkish President Erdogan is expected to ask the Russian leader for help fighting Kurdish militias in northern Syria, while Iran's Raisi will likely use leverage from a deal under which Iran will reportedly supply Russia with hundreds of operational UAVs for its war effort.

Iran is expected to ask Putin to exert pressure on the Americans for further concessions to the Islamic Republic in talks regarding a return to the 2015 nuclear deal scrapped by former President Trump.

With most world leaders, including some of his former allies, shunning Putin since the outbreak of the war, Iran and Turkey are seen as two of a dwindling number of countries dependant on Russian diplomatic assistance which will maintain ties with the Kremlin despite Russia's brutal attack on Ukraine's peaceful population.
