At a Cabinet meeting earlier this week, during which ministers received a comprehensive review of the war in Ukraine, Alternate Prime Minister Naftali Bennett warned against neglecting Israeli interests vis-à-vis Russia, Channel 13 News reported.
The review received by the ministers dealt, among other things, with the issue of sensitivity towards Russia in everything related to freedom of action in the skies of Syria. It also dealt with the attempts by the Russian government to restrict the Jewish Agency's activity in the country and thereby reduce the immigration of Jews to Israel.
Some of the ministers who attended the meeting reported that there was a real concern about the decision of the Russian authorities not to allow Jews to leave the country, due to the state of its relations with Israel.
Bennett intervened during the debate, saying, "It should be noted that the steps we are taking against Ukraine do not ignore our interests vis-à-vis the Russians. We need to pay attention to these balances - so as not to lead to a violation of our freedom of action in Syria."
The issue of Russia's attempts to reduce immigration to Israel is very troubling to the political echelon, and therefore the issue has been discussed by the political-security cabinet.
