United States Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says President Donald Trump won't scrap the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran in his speech on Friday. According to Tillerson, Trump will announce that the Iran nuclear deal is not in the interests of the United States, and will outline the issues Trump has with Iran's ballistic missile program and its interference in the Middle East.
Tillerson also said that the United States will push its European allies to renegotiate the Iran deal and to sanction Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, considered close to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
"This is the pathway we think provides us the best platform from which to attempt to fix this deal. We may be unsuccessful. We may not be able to fix this deal," Tillerson told reporters.
Tillerson said that while Iran is technically following the deal, the United States is unhappy with its interference in the Middle East. "We don't dispute that they're under technical compliance, [with the deal]" Tillerson said. "One of the weaknesses is the bar, the standard, to remain in technical compliance is not that difficult or has not been that difficult for them to meet."
Meanwhile, the deputy commander of Iran’s notorious Quds Force threatened the United States Friday, telling the Tanzim news agency that the United States "will regret it" if it continues acting belligerently towards Iran.
