Vice President Joe Biden married two gay men at his home in Delaware, posting a picture him officiating the wedding of the couple on Twitter.
“Proud to marry Brian and Joe at my house,” he wrote. “Couldn’t be happier, two longtime White House staffers, two great guys.”
The wedding was between Brian Mosteller, the director of Oval Office operations and Joe Mahshie, a trip coordinator for Michelle Obama.
According to the Vice President’s office, this was the first time that Biden had performed a wedding, obtaining a temporary certificate from the District of Columbia.
The wedding seals Biden’s legacy of supporting gay marriage despite his Catholic faith.
Biden famously signaled support for gay marriage in 2012, prior to the Obama re-election campaign.
“I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying woman and heterosexual men marrying women are entitled to the same, exact rights,” he said during an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press. “All the civil rights, all the civil liberties. And quite frankly I don’t see much of a distinction beyond that.”
Biden also cited the television show Will & Grace for assisting Americans in accepting gay marriage.
“I think Will & Grace did more to educate the American public more than almost anything anybody has done so far,” he said. “People fear that which is different. Now they’re beginning to understand.”
