With the US reducing its footprint in the Middle East, Russia is stepping up and it isn’t asking anyone what they think – not least Israel, as this week’s aerial strikes on the Syrian Golan show.
In the 1973 Yom Kippur War an IDF officer, to emphasize the gravity of the situation at the front line on the Golan Heights, radioed his superiors that “the Syrian are on the fences.”
